MSU MTH 234 Introductions to Vectors

Overview

At the end of one semester a MTH 234 instructor asked his students to think back and rate the difficulty of each section throughout MTH 234. Below is a graph of the results.

Graph showing the class gets exponentially harder as the chapters progress from chapter 12 through chapter 16.

And so we see that Chapter 16 is arguably the most difficult content, but it also has some of the most important and beautiful mathematics in our course. Therefore in order to help students better understand Chapter 16 we plan on dedicating more time to these sections. To help give us the necessary time, sections 1-4 of Chapter 12 will be accelerated. These first sections of Chapter 12 introduce three dimensional space, vectors, and vector operations.

  • For students who are already familiar with vectors and vector operations (addition, scalar multiplication, dot product, and cross product) it is quite possible that the class time and textbook will be enough to recall the necessary information.
  • For students who are not familiar with these topics, our textbook and the provided videos and notes linked below will be key to diving deeper into these sections and understanding the concepts.
