After reflecting on the last four years, I am happy that I decided to attend MSU. The MSU Math Department has enabled me to achieve all of my goals I had for my undergraduate education when I graduated high school. At many other universities, working on research as an undergraduate is reserved for only a handful of students, but at MSU, the professors actively encourage undergraduate students to work on research. The research I did with Drs. Mark Iwen and Rongrong Wang on compressed sensing and sigma-delta quantization gave me the opportunity to see the cutting edge of applied mathematics, and played a significant role in my decision to pursue it at the graduate level. As an Advanced Track Math degree student, I was fortunate to take a wide range of undergraduate and graduate level courses with excellent professors. Universally, I found the instruction to be both well taught and challenging. Professors such as Dr. Wald and Dr. Uriarte-Tuero helped make complicated and difficult material more understandable, while making the courses very engaging. In addition, the department ensures that there are ample teaching opportunities for undergraduates. I was able to TA the first course in the Advanced Track, MTH 317H, several times during the past three years. At other schools such positions would likely be filled by graduate students. Also, the Math Department administrative staff were always very helpful and supportive. The Math Department made the process of registering for graduate level classes as an undergraduate streamlined and easy. Finally, the Math Department advising and mentoring was extremely helpful. Dr. Sendova helped guide me throughout my time at MSU. She helped me in more ways than I can enumerate, including helping me find challenging and interesting courses that broadened my mathematical horizons, navigating the application process for REUs and graduate school, and becoming a TA. Over the last four year, the MSU Math Department has continually supported and worked on my behalf to make me as competitive as possible for graduate school. I would like to thank the MSU Math department for their support and encouragement during the past four years.

I can honestly say that my time at MSU has been a great catalyst for my growth as a scholar and as a human being. One extremely important driving force behind my growth has been the math department. All of the advanced math classes that I have taken have forced me to work hard, to think critically, and most importantly to learn! Also, the Discovering America research program offered me a fantastic opportunity to gain math research experience and to connect with students from around the world. I cannot thank MSU and the math department here enough for all of these wonderful experiences!

“Being a part of the Actuarial Science major and math department at MSU has given me a wonderful sense of community. I have built relationships that will last long after graduation, and I am thankful for the college experience I have had. The professors I have had are some of the most caring people I have ever met, and are genuinely passionate about helping students. Though I did not come to MSU with the intention of studying Actuarial Science, I am glad I chose the path I did.”

“Participating in MSU’s Putnam preparation program, including the Herzog test, was a great experience. It taught me a lot about how to write a good mathematical proof, and I was amazed to see how much my problem-solving skills improved. After preparing for the Putnam and Herzog exams, I am able to solve mathematical problems that would’ve seemed like insurmountable tasks less than a year ago. I want to give a big thank you to everyone who helped me prepare, especially Prof. Ignacio Uriarte-Tuero, who taught the Math 490 class.”

My favorite part of being a computational mathematics major is watching myself learn and develop analytic skills. I am passionate about computational biology research. The skills I have in math and computation build me a broader perspective in the analysis in my research. Friendly learning environments and a lot of support from extraordinary people at MSU make way for me to grow toward my career goals. It is my honor to be a part of the MSU family, and l look forward to gaining more valuable experience here.

"I am completing my final year in the Advanced Track Mathematics Program here at Michigan State. I wish to express my personal thanks to the donors who fund the mathematics department students scholarships here at MSU, and the L.C. Plant Scholarship in particular for their dedication to the program and the success of its students. Moreover, I would like to express thanks to the many amazing professors and advisors in the department who have made my experience as positive as possible. In particular, thanks go out to Dr. Sendova, who has been an excellent advisor and friend to the students in the Advanced track program, Ignacio Uriarte-Tuero who has been an excellent mentor and an inspiring teacher, Ilya Kachkovskiy who has been a great instructor with a sharp sense of humor, Linhui Shen whose algebra course almost convinced me to become an algebraist, Kristin Hendricks who has put up with my unceasing questions about anything I want to know about Geometry and Topology, Jose Perea for pushing me to work harder than I ever intended to and teaching an inspiring topology class (as well as subsequent independent study!), Jeanne Wald for running the discovering America program which has allowed me to collaborate with many brilliant students and professors in research and to participate socially in events that I otherwise wouldn't have ever been able, and Dapeng Zhan for sponsoring and advising my final research project with discovering America. These are just a few of the many people amongst those still here at MSU and those who have moved on to other places that have forever made an impact on my life. Beyond this,I want to express my personal thanks to the many students and alumni in the advanced track program here at MSU who have suck with me through both joy and sorrow and made my experience decidedly more joyful. You have helped me grow not just as a mathematician, but as a person, and to all of you I am forever in debt."

Going through the actuarial program at MSU provided opportunities for me to meet like-minded people who shared the same passion as me. From the first moment I joined the actuarial club, I felt like I was making the right choice when I decided my major. This program introduced me to new professors and students that had a deep understanding of the subject. I am extremely thankful to the people in these programs who helped me throughout the years with exam preparations, job searching, and interesting research projects. This semester, I have had the opportunity to give back by helping other students that were interested in an Actuarial Science major. I met some lifelong friends while studying at MSU and for that I am truly thankful. Go Green!
