Proposed Project for the MSU Industrial Math Students

Creation of an Optimal Catalogue Mailing Scheme

Displaystar was established in June 2002 in Portland, Oregon. We launched with a staff of two and several portable display products. By 2004, the line expanded to 50 exhibit and display products, as well as the production and printing of inkjet products. In 2011, Displaystar became one of the first Northwest producers of Dye Sublimated fabric graphics and consolidated all Dye-Sublimation printing in-house. Through this capability, we now print more than 500,000 sq. ft. of fabric graphics per year. Continued expansion of our production capabilities and product line has led to growth of between 30 to 50 percent per year. We specialize in the production of displays for the small to medium size exhibitor and work with many large exhibitors in the production of their displays and graphics.

Clients span all industries and include such notable companies as Nike, Columbia Sportswear, Chicago Bulls, Coldwell Banker, Department of Homeland Security, Honeywell, Marshall Space Flight center, Northrop Grumman, and FedEx.

This project will involve a review of the current distribution of an annual product catalogue, which is mailed to both prior and potential customers. The objective of the project is to investigate and determine the scheme which reaches the best customers for the lowest total cost. Implicit in these goals is identification of the “best” subset of prior and potential customers, i.e. those most likely to purchase products through the catalog. Possible approaches to identification include logistic regression and data mining, specifically cluster analysis.
