If a solution to a uniformly elliptic second order PDE with smooth coefficients vanishes on an open subset of a domain then it is zero on the whole domain. This is a classical result known as weak unique continuation. We will discuss stronger versions, including some recent quantitative results and outline applications to the study of eigenfunctions of Laplace-Beltrami operator on compact manifolds.
