Mathematics Exchange Program

The Michigan State University Department of Mathematics, in partnership with the Department of Statistics and Probability, previously hosted a one-semester exchange program that brought talented mathematics and statistics students from partner universities to MSU.

The program began in 2012 through a partnership with Zhejiang University and later expanded to include students from several universities in China. Over the years, exchange students became part of the MSU academic community through research, coursework and cultural experiences.

The Mathematics Exchange Program is not currently active. The Department of Mathematics values the relationships and experiences developed through the program and hopes to explore opportunities to renew or reestablish the exchange in the future.

Exchange Program Features

• Research Experience: Research was a central component of the exchange experience. Each participating student was paired with an MSU faculty research mentor and had the opportunity to work on an original project in a current area of mathematics or a related field. These experiences gave students an opportunity to explore mathematical research while working closely with faculty and MSU students.
• Courses: Exchange students participated in challenging undergraduate and graduate-level courses alongside MSU students. Depending on their preparation and interests, students could take advanced mathematics, statistics and related courses, including courses associated with MSU's Advanced Track undergraduate program.
• Discovering America: The exchange program also provided opportunities for students to experience life beyond the classroom. Through a series of cultural and social activities, exchange students connected with MSU students, faculty and the broader community while exploring Michigan and other parts of the United States. Past activities included trips to Chicago and Sleeping Bear Dunes, skiing, ice skating, sporting events, holiday gatherings, shopping and other local experiences. These activities were designed to help students experience American culture and build lasting friendships within the MSU community.

Looking Ahead

Although the Mathematics Exchange Program is not currently active, its history reflects the Department of Mathematics' commitment to international academic collaboration and opportunities for students to engage in mathematics beyond the traditional classroom.

The department hopes to consider bringing the program back in the future as new partnerships and opportunities develop.
