Frequently Asked Questions for MSIM Applicants
Q: When is the deadline to apply for Fall admission?
A: The deadline to apply for Fall admission to the Master of Science in Industrial Mathematics
(MSIM) program is January 20th of the desired year. Currently, we are still accepting
late applications.
Q: Is late application acceptable?
A: In case you missed the application deadline, please contact us at msim@math.msu.edu for discussion regarding the extension of deadline.
Q: Do you accept applications for the Spring or Summer semester?
A: No.
Q: Should I mail paper copies of my application materials to the Graduate School?
A: No. All materials must be submitted electronically. The Graduate School will not
accept paper copies.
Q: What materials am I required to upload?
A: The following items will be needed:
- Personal Statement.
- Academic Statement.
- CV or Resume.
- Three letters of recommendation, uploaded by your letter writers.
- Transcript(s). Unofficial copies are accepted for evaluation, official copies will be required if admitted.
- GRE General Test Scores. Unofficial copies are accepted for evaluation; official copies will be required if admitted. Scores must not be older than five years.
- TOEFL or IELTS Scores. Unofficial copies of English proficiency examinations are required for non-native English language speakers. Official copies will be required if admitted.
- The bank statement (Affidavit of Support for Graduate International Student).
Q: My TOEFL speaking, reading, or listening score is below 19 or my writing score
is below 22 will my application still be considered?
A: No, we cannot accept an application with unsatisfactory TOEFL scores because it is
the mandatory requirement of University. If your TOEFL scores do not meet University
requirements, please retake the TOEFL exam.
Q: What is an institution code for the GRE/TOEFL?
A: 1465 = Michigan State University
Q: When will my application be reviewed?
A: Applications that are fully completed by January 20 will be reviewed carefully in
February and March.
Q: When and how will I hear about a decision on my application?
A: In February and March we will start to inform students whom we have accepted if their
applications are fully completed by January 20. We may accept more with late applications
so the process may continue for some time. Applicants are notified of decisions via
email.
Q: Dose the department provide any financial aid for MSIM students?
A: The MSIM is a self-funded master’s degree program; students in the program pay their
own tuition. However, a small number of Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTAs), which
pay tuition and a stipend, are sometimes available to students in the MSIM program,
depending on department teaching needs. GTA support usually only for one semester
and is most typically offered for the fall semester to new students who accept MSIM
admission in the spring.
