You have 120 minutes to complete this exam.

Problem 1.

(10 points) Let G G be a group of order 81. Is G G necessarily abelian? Please justify your conclusion.

Problem 2.

(10 points) Let S n S_n be the symmetric group with n ≥ 5 n\ge5 . Find all the normal subgroups of S n S_n . Please justify your conclusion.

Problem 3.

(10 points) Determine the greatest common divisor of the polynomials f ( x ) = x 100 − 1 f(x)=x^{100}-1 and g ( x ) = x 17 + 2 x 6 + x + 100 g(x)=x^{17}+2x^6+x+100 in the polynomial ring ℚ [ x ] \mathbb Q[x] .

Problem 4.

(10 points) Consider the ring

ℤ [ − 2 ] = { a + b − 2 ∣ a , b ∈ ℤ } . \mathbb Z[\sqrt{-2}]=\{a+b\sqrt{-2}\mid a,b\in\mathbb Z\}.

Define N ( a + b − 2 ) = a 2 + 2 b 2 N(a+b\sqrt{-2})=a^2+2b^2 . Prove that ℤ [ − 2 ] \mathbb Z[\sqrt{-2}] with the function N N forms a Euclidean domain.

Problem 5.
