Problem 1.

Let p be an odd prime number, and let ζ = e 2 π i p ∈ C be a primitive p th root of unity. Let G = Gal ( Q ( ζ ) / Q ) and recall the isomorphism χ : G → ( Z / p Z ) × determined by σ ( ζ ) = ζ χ ( σ ) for σ ∈ G . For i ∈ ( Z / p Z ) × , let σ i = χ − 1 ( i ) ∈ G .

Let H ⊂ G be the index two subgroup and let S ⊂ ( Z / p Z ) × be the set of squares, so that χ ( H ) = S . Let N = ( Z / p Z ) × − S be the set of non-squares. Let α ∈ Q ( ζ ) be the element

α = ∑ σ ∈ H σ ( ζ ) = ∑ i ∈ S ζ i

and let β ∈ Q ( ζ ) be the element

β = ∑ j ∈ N ζ j .
  1. Show that α + β = − 1 and that α and β are fixed by H .
  2. Show that, if τ ∈ G − H , then τ ( α ) = β and τ ( β ) = α . Deduce that α β ∈ Q .
  3. Show that α β = ∑ j ∈ N ∑ i ∈ S ζ i + i j .
  4. Use the previous formula to compute which rational number α β is. (Hint: the answer will depend on whether − 1 ∈ S or − 1 ∈ N .)
  5. Note that [ Q ( ζ ) H : Q ] = 2 , so Q ( ζ ) H = Q ( d ) for some squarefree d . What is d ?

Problem 2.

Let p be a prime number and let f ( x ) ∈ Q [ x ] be an irreducible polynomial of degree p . Let F f be the splitting field of f in C . Suppose that f ( x ) has p − 2 real roots and 2 non-real roots in C . Show that the Galois group Gal ( F f / Q ) is S p .

For the next two questions, let R be a Noetherian commutative ring.

Problem 3.

Let M be an R -module and assume that there is an isomorphism φ : R → M ⊗ R N for some R -module N .

  1. Show that M is finitely generated (Hint: write φ ( 1 ) = ∑ i = 1 n x i ⊗ y i with x i ∈ M and y i ∈ N and show that x 1 , … , x n generate M as an R -module.)
  2. Show that M m ≅ R m as R m -modules for every maximal ideal m ⊂ R .

Problem 4.

Assume that R is an integral domain, and let M be an injective R -module.

  1. Show that M is divisible. That is, show that for any m ∈ M and any r ∈ R , there is an m 0 ∈ M such that m = r m 0 .
  2. Now suppose that M is non-zero and finitely generated. Show that R is a field. (Hint: show that M m = 0 for all non-zero maximal ideals m ⊂ R .)
