Numerical Analysis - January 2025

Problem 1

(15 points) Let A ∈ ℂ m × n , m ≥ n , with linearly independent columns:

A = [ a 1 , ⋯ , a n ] .

What are the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the projection matrix

P = I − A ( A * A ) − 1 A * ?

Problem 2

(10 points) Let A , B ∈ ℂ m × m be arbitrary matrices. Show that

∥ A B ∥ F ≤ ∥ A ∥ 2 ∥ B ∥ F ,

where ∥ ⋅ ∥ 2 and ∥ ⋅ ∥ F denote the 2-norm and Frobenius norm, respectively.

Problem 3

(15 points) Let A ∈ ℝ n × n be a symmetrical positive definite matrix. Show that the following holds:

∥ x ∥ 2 2 ≤ ∥ A − 1 ∥ 2 ∥ x ∥ A 2

where x ∈ ℝ n is arbitrary, and ∥ x ∥ A 2 = ⟨ A x , x ⟩ ; here ⟨ ⋅ , ⋅ ⟩ is the Euclidean inner product.

Problem 4

(15 points) Show that if A ∈ ℝ m × m is symmetric and positive definite, then solving the linear system A x = b amounts to computing

x = ∑ i = 1 m c i λ i v i ,

where λ i are the eigenvalues of A and v i are the corresponding eigenvectors, and c i are some constants determined by b and v i .

Problem 5

(15 points) Let A ∈ ℂ 2 n × 2 n and B ∈ ℂ n × n , and let I be the n × n identity matrix. Let

A = [ I B B H I ]

with ∥ B ∥ 2 < 1 , where B H is the Hermitian conjugate of B. Show that

∥ A ∥ 2 ∥ A − 1 ∥ 2 = 1 + ∥ B ∥ 2 1 − ∥ B ∥ 2 .

Problem 6

Consider the following linear system,

A x = F , ( 1 )

where

A = [ 2 − 1 0 ⋯ ⋯ 0 − 1 2 − 1 0 ⋯ 0 0 − 1 2 − 1 ⋱ ⋮ ⋮ ⋱ ⋱ ⋱ ⋱ ⋮ ⋯ ⋯ 0 − 1 2 − 1 ⋯ ⋯ ⋯ 0 − 1 2 ]

  1. (5 points) Prove that the n × n tridiagonal matrix A is symmetric, positive definite (SPD).

  2. (5 points) Let B be a tridiagonal SPD matrix in the form of the matrix A. Prove that the Cholesky factor L of B has nonzero entries only along the main diagonal and the sub-diagonal lines, where B = L L t . Give the formula for L.

  3. (5 points) Design an O ( n ) algorithm to solve the linear system A x = F .

Problem 7

Let A ∈ ℝ m × n , rank ( A ) = r , and b ∈ ℝ m , and consider the system A x = b with unknown x ∈ ℝ n . Making no assumption about the relative sizes of n and m, we formulate the following least-squares problem:

of all the x ∈ ℝ n that minimizes ∥ b − A x ∥ 2 , find the one for which ∥ x ∥ 2 is minimized.

  1. (5 points) Show that the set Γ of all minimizers of the least-squares function is a closed convex set:

Γ = { x ∈ ℝ n : ∥ A x − b ∥ 2 = min v ∈ ℝ n ∥ A v − b ∥ 2 } .

  1. (5 points) Show that the minimum-norm element in Γ is unique.

  2. (5 points) Show that the minimum norm solution is x = A + b = V Σ + U * b , where A = U Σ V * , and Σ + is the pseudo-inverse of Σ.
