Numerical Analysis - January 2026

Please do each of the following problems, providing concise answers with justification. The total number of points is 100.

Problem 1

(15 points) Let P ∈ ℂ m × m be a nonzero projector. Show that ∥ P ∥ 2 ≥ 1 .

Problem 2

(15 points) Let A be an n × n matrix with ∥ A ∥ < 1 , where ∥ ⋅ ∥ is an induced matrix norm.

  1. Show that the matrix I + A is nonsingular.

  2. Show that

∥ ( I + A ) − 1 ∥ ≤ 1 1 − ∥ A ∥ .

Problem 3

(15 points) Let A ∈ ℂ m × n , m ≥ n , with linearly independent columns:

A = [ a 1 , ⋯ , a n ] .

What are the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the projection matrix

P = I − A ( A * A ) − 1 A * ?

Problem 4

(10 points) Suppose A is an invertible 202 × 202 matrix with ∥ A ∥ 2 = 100 and ∥ A ∥ F = 101 . Give the sharpest possible lower bound on the 2-norm condition number κ ( A ) .

Problem 5

(15 points) Prove Gershgorin’s Disk Theorem:

Let A ∈ ℂ m × m with entries { a i j } . Let r i = ∑ j ≠ i | a i j | . Let D i be the closed disk in the complex plane centered at a i i with radius r i .

Prove that if λ is an eigenvalue of A, then

λ ∈ ⋃ i D i .

In other words, prove that every eigenvalue lies within at least one of the disks D i .

Problem 6

(15 points) Let

B = ( 3 − 6 41 / 5 0 1 1 4 − 8 63 / 5 ) .

  1. Find the QR decomposition of B using the Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization process.

  2. Write down the unitary Householder reflector matrix that you should multiply against B in order to zero out all but the first entry of its first column.

Problem 7

(15 points) Let x j ∈ ℝ m be the j-th column of X ∈ ℝ m × n be given. Let y ∈ ℝ m and λ > 0 also be given. Given a vector w ∈ ℝ n , define the following function

J ( w ) = ∥ X w − y ∥ 2 2 + λ ∥ w ∥ 1 ,

where ∥ ⋅ ∥ 2 and ∥ ⋅ ∥ 1 denote the 2- and 1-norm in ℝ n , respectively. Letting the i-th component w i of w vary and the other components of w be fixed, consider the following one-variable minimization problem reduced from J ( w ) :

min w i f ( w i ) ≡ min w i ∥ ∑ j = 1 n w j x j − y ∥ 2 2 + λ | w i | + λ ∑ j ≠ i | w j | = min w i ∥ w i x i + r ∥ 2 2 + λ | w i | + C = min w i ∑ j = 1 m ( w i x j i + r j ) 2 + λ | w i | + C .

where r ≡ ∑ j ≠ i w j x j − y is in ℝ m with r = ( r k ) m × 1 , and C = λ ∑ j ≠ i | w j | . Show that the optimal solution w i * is given by

w i * = { 0 if | a | ≤ λ , − λ + a b if − λ + a b > 0 , λ + a b if λ + a b < 0 ,

where a = − ∑ j = 1 m 2 x j i r j and b = ∑ j = 1 m 2 x j i 2 .
