Numerical Analysis - May 2021

Please do each of the following problems, providing concise answers with justification.

The total number of points is 100.

1.

(10p) Let A ∈ ℂ m × n m ≥ n . Show that A * A is nonsingular if and only if A has full column rank.

2.

(10p) Let A ∈ ℂ m × m and A = A * .

  1. Prove that all eigenvalues of A are real.
  2. Let x and y be eigenvectors of A corresponding to eigenvalues λ and μ respectively. Give a sufficient condition on λ and μ for x and y to be orthogonal.

3.

(10p) Prove that the determinant of a Householder reflector is negative one.

4.

(15p) Fix 0 < ε < 1 and suppose that A ∈ ℝ m × m is symmetric and nonsingular. Show that if ∥ A − I ∥ F ≥ ε , then ∥ A − 1 − I ∥ F ≥ ε 2 , where ∥ · ∥ F denotes the Frobenius norm.

5.

(15p) Determine the rate of convergence of the Rayleigh quotient r ( v k ) = v k T A v k to an eigenvalue of A ∈ ℝ n × n , A = A T , with vectors v k ∈ ℝ n given by the normalized power method v k + 1 = A v k ∥ A v k ∥ .

6.

Suppose A x = b and ( A + δ A ) x̂ = b + δ b and assume that

∥ I + A − 1 δ A − 1 ∥ ≤ 1 1 − ∥ δ A ∥ ∥ A − 1 ∥
  1. (10p) Show that ∥ δ x ∥ ∥ x ∥ ≤ κ ( A ) 1 − κ ( A ) ∥ δ A ∥ ∥ A ∥ ( ∥ δ A ∥ ∥ A ∥ + ∥ δ b ∥ ∥ b ∥ )

    (1)

    where x̂ = x + δ x and κ ( A ) = ∥ A ∥ ∥ A − 1 ∥ .

  2. (10p) Let δ A = 0 and A = ( 0 2 1 0 )

Find vectors δ b and b such that the bound (1) becomes an equality.

7.

(20p) Let A ∈ ℝ n × n be symmetric and positive definite (spd), and consider the following iteration.

Choose A 0 = A

for k = 0 , 1 , 2 , …

Compute the Cholesky factor L k of A k (so A k = L k L k T )

Set A k + 1 = L k T L k

end

Here L k is lower triangular with positive diagonal elements.

  1. Show that A k is similar to A, and that A k is spd (the iteration is therefore well-defined).

Now consider the special case of a 2 × 2 spd matrix,

    A = ( a b b c ) , a ≥ c
  2. For this matrix, perform one step of the algorithm and write down A 1 .
  3. Use the result from (b) to argue that A k converges to diag ( λ 1 , λ 2 ) , where the eigenvalues of A are ordered as λ 1 ≥ λ 2 > 0 .
