Volberg to present Norbert Wiener Center Distinguished Lecture

Alexander “Sasha” Volberg, a University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Mathematics, has been invited to present at the 2026 Fall Fourier Talks (FFT) at the University of Maryland on Thursday, Oct. 8.

Fall Fourier Talks features researchers in harmonic analysis and its broadly understood applications that come from academia, government, and industry. Volberg will present the Norbert Wiener Center Distinguished Lecture.

Volberg specializes in harmonic analysis, singular integrals and operator theory and represents MSU mathematics internationally. His 2014 paper published in Acta Mathematica resolved the 30-year-old David-Semmes conjecture, concerning the possible structure of the singularity in the underlying measure of bounded Calderon-Zygmund operators.

Volberg, who joined MSU in 1991, received his master’s degree from St. Petersburg University and his Ph.D. from the Steklov Mathematical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

During his career, Volberg has published more than 160 research papers. His many awards and honors include a Salem Prize, a Lars Onsager Medal for the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and a Humboldt Foundation Professorship.

FFT 2026 will take place in the Norbert Wiener Center at the Department of Mathematics at the University of Maryland.
